Ethiopia

Over the summer of 2008, 4 volunteers from World Possible piloted a week long education program at Admas University College, Addis Ababa and Admas University College, Debre Zeyit in Ethiopia. Working collaboratively with local college students, high school students, middle school students, and faculty. The week long program was comprised of six separate courses with the common theme of increasing technology awareness, addressing community needs through technology solutions, incorporating project-based course work,  community outreach and expanding the human network.

With more than fifty percent of its population younger than sixteen, Ethiopia is a nation at a tipping point. Due to this unique situation we believe that Ethiopia can be an integral contributor to the global market in terms of talent, products and services. At such a time, it is essential to promote the development of technology, education and industry in the country to create space in the job market for the younger generations to survive. Failure to take necessary steps may lead to wide spread conflict, starvation and suffering. As members of global societies it becomes our responsibility to extend a helping hand and work with the developing economics and their citizens. Through investments in education and technology, Ethiopia can ensure the success of their future generations.

The courses conducted were Communication and Collaboration Tools (Web 2.0), Network Security, Engineering Economics and Technology Entrepreneurship, Game based interactive class explaining Networking, Internet 101, and Women Entrepreneurship. In order to reach as broad audience as possible, each course we taught was modified to be accessible to all levels of background from beginner to advanced. Some of the teaching staff also took advantage of this opportunity by attending the advance level sessions. Based on the positive comments we received from the students this program was a success and in addition the feedback will be used to improve future programs.

The classes were geared towards a hands on and project based environment. Several wikis, blogs and discussion forums were designed and utilized by students to leverage Web 2.0 technology for their class projects and programs. Technology entrepreneurship skills were honed in a team environment by examining business cases and working on projects that addressed community needs. We encouraged students to get involved in solving community problems by exploring innovative technological solutions and in becoming proactive in their approach to learning. First Linux server and collaboration platform was installed and setup at the Addis Ababa campus of Admas University College.
